Monday Morning Check-In: Damn Cows.

Well, I tried to get this post written up in the morning but failed.  The neighbor’s cows were out again this morning and I wanted to go out and help round them up before they got into our yard and did more damage.  It is difficult to walk out there from all the times they visited last week.  Oy.   Not a lot of reading last week.  I managed to finish one book and the review for that will post early next month.  I need to read another that releases tomorrow but I find myself hooked on a game at the moment.  I’ve been playing for over a month now and have yet to grow tired of it.  Game of Sultans if you are interested and want to check it out.  I think the connection to Turkey is what has kept me playing.  Over the weekend we bought a cd player so I can listen to my audiobooks on CD while working around the house, I need to put plastic up on the windows.  I also figured that I never go anywhere far enough away to listen to a book while I drive.  When the husband is in the car he either wants to talk or listen to the radio, which is fine but I’d like to finish up this book I started and three miles is not enough time.  Have a great week everyone!

Monday Morning Check-In: Arctic Blast

Good Monday morning everyone.  Like many other spots in the US we are experiencing another arctic blast here in Iowa so today I’m going to be hibernating in my living room under a thick blanket and wearing about two layers as I knit and listen to my audiobook.  This blast feels worse than the one we had in the new year that froze the pipes and car up but it is probably just the wind making everything so miserable.  I’ve already spent far too much time on YouTube today so this afternoon I hope to stay off the computer and work on projects or read.  I have managed to get into my current review book but have been a bit distracted with the Charley Davidson series to make much progress.  I’m almost done with book five and have book six already downloaded so maybe after I finish those I can finish up the review title.  If you follow me on Instagram you know that I’ve already broken my book buying ban for the year when I couldn’t pass up the latest release by J.R. Ward.  Of course, I need to read last year’s book The Chosen, to avoid spoilers, before I can dive into the latest from the spin-off series.

Well, I’ll leave you here and hopefully I’ll finish a book this afternoon and can bring you a review.  Have a great week everyone!

Monday Morning Check-In: Giveaway update.

Good morning everyone!  I hope you all had a great weekend.  Mine was pretty good.  Made some progress on the kitchen floor that we are refinishing and was disappointed to discover that my current audiobook had one hour left on the checkout and I had about 9 hours of listening time left.  Dammit.  So I returned it and put myself back on the bottom of the hold list.  Might give up listening to that one and just read it.  Started the second audiobook and managed to get a bunch of work done but not sure how much of my book I absorbed….

Decided to have a screen-free day last week and managed to get a bunch of progress in my current physical read.  Such a great book!  I won’t say more as I will most likely finish it this afternoon and you can read the review.

I did a post last week about holding a giveaway to celebrate hitting 1,000 followers.  My plan is to hold that next month after I pay my property tax and think up the best way to hold one to include international followers.  So keep an eye out for that in October!  The main requirement will be that you need to be following the blog on either WordPress or Facebook or following me on Instagram or Twitter.   The giveaway will probably be for a $25 Amazon gift certificate or a book worth up to $25 on The Book Depository. Let me know in the comments which you prefer or any other ideas you might have.  I’m not a huge fan of Amazon but feel it might be easiest.

Happy Reading!

Top Ten Tuesday: Road Trip

Top Ten Tuesday

Welcome to another contribution to the wildly popular Top Ten Tuesday hosted by The Broke and The Bookish.  This week they ask us to share lists on the following:

May 23: Summer Reads Freebie

I’ve done the beach reads and most of the books wouldn’t have changed from that list so this year I’m going to do a different type of summer reads TTT list.  Being a fairly recent convert to audiobooks I’m going to pick ten audiobooks that I’ve listened to to suggest for your next road trip!  Warning, some of these might not be child-friendly.

Ten audiobooks for your next road trip.

  1. The Martian 10 Hours 59 Minutes:  One of my favorite books makes it back on the list.  Haven’t seen this one in a while.  I actually listened to this on my trip to BEA last year and it was great!  Lots of swear words so maybe not for pre-teen listeners.
  2. The Traveler (Fourth Realm, #1) 15 Hours 43 Minutes: This was a fun thriller/government conspiracy story that will provide some entertainment and conversation for those who already believe the government has too much power and is too involved in our lives.
  3. The Long Earth (The Long Earth, #1) 11 Hours 31 Minutes: Great science fiction book about multiple earths and the consequences of what happens to society when people are no longer owned by their government.
  4. Sleeping Giants (Themis Files, #1) 8 Hours 28 Minutes: Another science fiction listen that works better as an audiobook than it did in print for me.  Multiple narrators and written as a series of released government documents.
  5. By Blood 14 Hours 4 minutes: A kind of creepy tale about a gentleman eavesdropping on a therapist session and becoming overly involved in the patient’s life.
  6. War of the Worlds: Invasion from Mars 1 Hour 2 Minutes: A short classic story narrated by Star Trek actors.  Lots of fun!
  7. A Dirty Job (Grim Reaper, #1) 11 Hours 47 Minutes: Quite a bit of swearing in this one too but lots of humor as well.
  8. Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore (Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore, #1)7 Hours 41 Minutes: This was an interesting story with a paranormal twist.  Reminded me a bit of The Da Vinci Code with lots of puzzles and secret society.
  9. Saturn Run 16 Hours 35 Minutes: Another Science Fiction, a space opera this time.  This was a great adventure piece that did not give me hope that the human race will change its stripes anytime soon.
  10. What If?: Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions6 Hours 36 Minutes: One non-fiction book for the list.  This book is full of crazy circumstances that the author works our the logic for what would happen.  For example: What if there was no moon?  What if everyone on the planet jumped up at once?  This book is probably the most kid friendly on the list and would provide great conversation starters when it is time to stop and eat.

There you have my list for the week.  What audiobooks do you think would make great road trip listens?  Share in the comments!

Monday Morning Check-In: Limbo

Monday Morning Check-In

Good Monday Morning everyone.  I’m feeling a little lost in limbo as I’m 15 days away.  My reading has consisted pretty heavily of audiobooks recently as I work on projects.  I started knitting a blanket in my favorite colors and am pretty into it so thanks to audiobooks I’m not falling behind in my reading.  The quality of those books is another story altogether.  I’m working on the Long Earth series and I think I’m going to be done with it after the third book. The story is simply all over the place, lots of lecturing and wandering plot threads that don’t go anywhere.  While it is interesting I’m tired of the story spinning its wheels.

Net Galley has been kind to me lately.  All of the major releases that I am interested in have been approved!!!  While I’m thrilled I’m also hesitant to start some of them as I wanted to hold some of them for my recovery.  I’m going to be doing a whole lot of not much for several weeks what better way to spend those days then lost in a book I’m excited to read.  One of them releases on my surgery day so I will read that one before but the others have later release dates so we will see.

Chore day at home today and then I need to get my walking in and then some actual reading!

Monday Morning Check-in: Staying Positive

Monday Morning Check-In

Good Monday morning everyone!  I realize that I have been a little dark and  gloomy lately so this morning I have decided for the rest of the year I am only going to share positive posts, or try to anyways…  Maybe if I spend some time dwelling on what makes me happy or that is going right I can start to shift my attitude around to my more optimistic self.  So, let’s see.

Over the weekend we had amazing eBay sales, going to have some money to put towards the new car soon.  I am also working on a display with the library directory for our town’s Christmas celebration.  Going to be pretty amazing and I will be sure to take a picture when it is all done to share with you all.  Probably posted to Instagram.  I haven’t been doing much reading reading lately.  I really need to get my eyes checked, I need bifocals and a designated set of reading glasses.  I have been enjoying my audiobooks, however.  The one I am listening to currently  is really good.  The Long Earth by Pratchett.  Has mixed reviews, seems that people either love it or hate it.  I’m leaning towards love it.  Managed to get most of my chores done yesterday so today I have time to either listen or read while I relax after a busy weekend.  We received our first snow over the weekend and I would talk more about it but I just said I would stay positive….

Happy reading and see you tomorrow for Top Ten Tuesday.
