30 Day Book Challenge: Day 30!!!

Day 30: Your favorite book of all time*.

The Martian

Goodreads Link, Blog Review

Really, favorite book of all time and I pick The Martian, something I only read three years ago… Really?  Yes, really.  Okay, let me explain why there is a little * up there.  This is my favorite book of all time for this moment in my life.  If I had to pick a book to recommend to any reader without knowing their taste or previous reading history I would pick The Martian.  If I had to pick one book to save from my library for the rest of my life, okay I would still pick my Kenyon collection but I would so sneak this title into the mix.  You know that Dark-Hunter story set on Mars.  I am so grateful for this blog as it was through a review request with Blogging for Books that I was introduced to this title.  I knew nothing about it and was simply blown away.  I have not read a review title since that has affected me in the same way.  Oh sure, I’ve enjoyed a lot of the review titles that I’ve read while book blogging but none of them has impressed me as much as this title and this author.  I am desperately waiting for his next book and have added him to my author-met bucket list.  This is a great book, an okay movie, and a fun audio book.  I know I pimp it a lot on this blog and for that reason alone it is (currently) my favorite book of all time.

Well, we made it!  30 Day Book Challenge complete.  I hope you enjoyed this little trip into my reading life for the past 30 days.  It was interesting and I’m glad I did it. Not sure I will be doing this sort of thing regularly, but a challenge is good for you every now and again.

Day 29: A book everyone hated but you liked

The Here and Now

Goodreads Link, Blog Review

Usually I am hating a popular book that everyone seems to love but the book pictured above is one that is actually reversed.  I was totally surprised when I went through the reviews on Goodreads after finishing this book they aren’t pretty and some even quite rude.  I liked this book.  I thought it had a good message as to how climate change is going to affect our environment in ways we can’t even to understand.  This is an important concept that more readers of YA level literature need to hear about and it seemed like everyone was hung up on the failed romance in the book.  That’s fine though, not every book is for every reader but in the end you still need to share your opinion about what you read in a polite and helpful manner. When I see reviews like some that were posted  for this book I lose respect for the reviewer not the title they are trashing.

Day 28: Favorite title.

F*ck That: An Honest Meditation

Goodreads Link, Blog Review

Alright now like covers I’m usually not that hung up on clever titles.  I rather an author spend their creative energy in the actual plot of the book, but, this one is a title that I delight in.  Its funny and still makes me smile when I think about this creative little parody of a new-age meditation guide.  The book is beautiful to boot and if you ever come across this one pick it up for a look.  It is so short that you won’t need to spend the cash to actually buy it, as I think it was a little overpriced, but it would make a nice gift if you know someone who will gel with the humor.  Almost enjoy this as much as the spine label in adult fiction by authors with the last name Young.  Think on that one a bit.

Day 27: The most surprising plot twist or ending.

The Shadows (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #13)

Goodreads Link, Blog Review

Okay now I can’t really go into much details on this one as it will spoil the book for you.  This one did surprise me and if you want to know why you can read my review that does contain spoilers linked above.  Yep. All I’m going to say.

Day 26: A book that changed your opinion about something.

A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, #1)

Goodreads Link, Blog Review

This was another difficult day for me or maybe I am just getting challenge fatigue…  Anyway, I wasn’t sure what book to pick because I could not think of a title that had changed me in some distinct or fundamental way.  I think that all books influence us add to our evolving personality but I am a pretty stubborn person and to have a book that would say change me from liberal to conservative or to suddenly accept something I’ve been against just isn’t going to happen, or at the least I’m not going to admit it.  Yep, I’m just that petty.    I went with this book because I feel that it saved the high-fantasy genre for me after The Lord of the Rings almost ruined it for me forever.  So thank you George R.R. Martin for that even if I am through with this series…

Day 25: A Character who you can relate to the most.

The Goldfinch

Goodreads Link, Blog Review

Possible spoilers ahead.

The character that I identify the most with was a tough one for me.  I believe most readers take a little piece of the personality of the characters they love into themselves or see themselves mirrored in what they read.  Some more than others because much as I might wish I do not see myself as a vampire… Anyway, the main character Theo Decker in this story just struck a chord with me.  When we reach the scene where he lost his mother in the bombing I just lost it.  I was about the same age as he when my mother died in a car crash, also violently.  I was listening to this book while shearing sheep and I sat there just bawling over my poor ewe, who I’m sure thought I had lost it.  I could so get how Theo could carry that painting with him throughout his life.  When you lose someone you love you do almost anything to keep a piece of them with you.  So yeah, I get where Theo is coming from.  It can be summed up in this favorite quote from the book.

“Everything I did for the rest of my life would only separate us more and more.  Days she was no longer a part of, an ever-growing distance between us. Every single day for the rest of my life, she would only be further away.”

Day 24: A book that you wish more people would’ve read.

The Gargoyle

Goodreads Link, No Review

This is such a beautiful story I wish more people would have read it and I wish the author would’ve written another book.  It is creative and dark and romantic and a simply a beautiful story about love.  I have this book in my home library and hope to read it again someday, now so I can have a written review to share with people.  Hey I’ve not re-read a book for this year yet perhaps I will choose this stand-alone for my re-read.  Will have to give that some though.  Go out and read this one, you won’t be disappointed.

Day 23: A book you wanted to read for a long time but still haven’t.

How to Flirt with a Naked Werewolf (Naked Werewolf, #1)

Goodreads Link, No Review

I enjoy this funny romance author quite a bit and have wanted to try her shifter series for some time now.  It seems to be a book series that is difficult to get one’s hands on though.  I have never seen it in stores or through my book exchange site and it must not be cheap on B&N for I haven’t bought it.  I do believe it is available through Inter Library Loan but I haven’t been interested enough to request it yet.  I think I’m waiting to come across it second-hand someday.  It doesn’t surprise me that I haven’t gotten around to it yet as I seem to be putting off catching up on her other series too.   Someday….

Day 22: Favorite book you own

Styxx (Dark-Hunter, #22)

Goodreads Link, Blog Review

I have gotten over my need to hang on to every book I’ve read.  Working in a library I’ve learned to weed, even my own shelves.  So for a book to earn a spot in my personal library it has to be significant to me in some way and one that I plan to reread.  I also have a small collection of signed books that have their own special shelf in the library, you know in case of fire I can run up and grab them quickly.  So from these special books that stand out from all the ones in my personal library Styxx stands out as probably my favorite.  It is my favorite from that series but it is also one of the books I took to have signed my Ms. Kenyon herself.  So it also has that memory attached to it as well.  I will never part with this book, even if I outgrow the author, this book will remain as a perfect moment in my life where I fulfilled a dream and did something for myself.

Day 21: Favorite book from your childhood.

The Island Stallion (The Black Stallion, #4)

Goodreads Link, No Review

While I did read this book as a child and it does stand out as one of my favorites it was selected to represent the majority of the books I consumed as a pre-teen (after reaching teens it was simply a whole lot of Stephen King…).  Most of the books I read or school art I did centered around horses.  Yep, I was a typical girl who grew up in a small rural town and couldn’t have her own horse so I read about them and was green with envy of my friends that lived in the country.  So let this book (did you notice this was different from what I posted on Instagram?)represent all the horse and animals books I enjoyed as a child.
