August 1969 San Francisco. Ajax Penumbra seeks a book–the single surviving copy of the Techne Tycheon, a mysterious volume that has brought and lost great fortune for anyone who has owned it. Late one night, after another day of dispiriting dead ends, he stumbles across a 24-hour bookstore, and the possibilities before him expand exponentially.
This is a short prequel story to Mr. Pemumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore, a story I listened to a while back on a whim and ended up enjoying. I have kept an eye out for other books by this author and have his book Sourdough on hold but in the meantime this one became available and I decided to download it.
It isn’t a long story, just under two hours long, but it was quite good. I remembered enough from the other book that I knew what was going on. This is one case where I think you will get more from the prequel if you read the other book first. Otherwise, much of it will simply go over your head. Having read the other book first, though, I felt like an insider and delighted in knowing more than the main character. This is the story of how Mr. Pemumbra discovers his bookstore and ends up working there. There was quite a bit of backstory to his character and it was interesting to get to know him better.
If you enjoyed the other book I would say don’t miss this one. If you haven’t read the other one then I suggest starting there and coming back. Not my typical advice but I think it will work better for you.
