Book Synopsis:

A vampire aristocrat, Peyton is well aware of his duty to his bloodline: mate with an appropriate female of his class and carry on his family’s traditions. And he thought he’d found his perfect match—until she fell in love with someone else. Yet when his split-second decision in a battle with the enemy endangers the life of another trainee, Peyton has to face the idea that his future, and his heart, actually lie with another.

Novo, as a female in the Black Dagger Brotherhood’s training program, feels like she has to prove herself to everybody—and she has no interest in being distracted by falling in love. But when Peyton proves to be so much more than a rich playboy, she is forced to confront the tragedy that has broken her soul and closed her off from love.

As the two grapple with Novo’s past and Peyton’s present, another couple must contend with an erotic connection that is unparalleled—and potentially scandalous.

Saxton, who has had his heart broken, discovers in himself a deep-seated attraction to Ruhn, a new member of the household. But will the other male explore the connection? Or will he close his mind and his heart to what could be true love . . . and cost Saxton everything?

My Review:

I was so worried about not liking The Chosen that I put it off for an entire year.  Then this book released in January and I needed to read the other one before diving into the spin-off release.  Ended up LOVING The Chosen and a little luke-warm in regards to this title.  Surprising as I’ve been really excited about the Black Dagger Legacy series up until now.

So what happened in this book.  Simply I found Peyton annoying and while I don’t have anything against Novo I wasn’t really into the miscarriage plot line. While I can feel empathy for her but kids, beyond the fur and feathered kind, have never been my thing.   Fortunately, this book had a second romance to keep me turning the page.  This was also Saxton and Ruhn’s HEA story and much the like synopsis I felt that it was simply tagged on to this book… I was much more engaged with their storyline and a bit frustrated that it either didn’t get more page time or have their own book altogether.  Oh, well.  Maybe Ms. Ward will cycle back to them in a future book.

Now don’t get me wrong I thoroughly enjoyed this story.  I was just a little frustrated that the plotline I was interested in wasn’t the main one.   The only aspect of Novo and Peyton’s story was the drama with Novo’s sister which I so enjoyed watching how that played out.  I did like the pairing of Novo and Peyton as they seem to bring out the best in each other.  He is a bit of a clown to her serious side.  I just found his mouth and attitude highly annoying and spent much of my time wanting to smack him.

Saxton and Ruhn’s plot was so much better in my opinion and I loved how they ended up together.  The whole issue with the house and them being paired up to help the older woman was sweet.  Of course, Ms. Ward made me worried near the end, especially after The Shadow’s book, for a moment I was worried that things might not turn out for Saxton.  If that was the case I might have thrown the book in protest.

Going to dive into the novella in the Blackdagger series next and then I should be all caught up for the next release in April.  Not sure what to rate this book.  Peyton and Novo would be a solid 3 but Saxton and Ruhn would get 5 stars.  So perhaps I’ll split the difference even though I’m leaning more towards a 3.5 for the book.  That extra star is for Saxton and Ruhn.

My Rating: 4 Stars
