Book Synopsis:

Vampire hunter Elena Deveraux and her lover, the lethally beautiful archangel Raphael, have returned home to New York only to face an uncompromising new evil…

A vampire has attacked a girls’ school—the assault one of sheer, vicious madness—and it is only the first act. Rampant bloodlust takes vampire after vampire, threatening to make the streets run with blood. Then Raphael himself begins to show signs of an uncontrolled rage, as inexplicable storms darken the city skyline and the earth itself shudders. The omens are suddenly terrifyingly clear.

An ancient and malevolent immortal is rising. The violent winds whisper her name: Caliane. She has returned to reclaim her son, Raphael. Only one thing stands in her way: Elena, the consort who must be destroyed…

My Review:

I had been zipping right along in this series and then about half-way through this one I started struggling.  I’m not sure what it was, because I still enjoy the characters and want to know what happens next, but I just wasn’t excited about it.  I think it might have something to do with some personal drama that I am working through.  I haven’t felt like doing much of anything.  So I am going to take a break from this series for a few books and come back to it when my head is in a better place.

I did enjoy this one though.  It was interesting to watch both Elena and Raphael deal with parental issues in this book.  One has mommy issues the other daddy.  Personally I think neither parent are real winners but for now I like Raphael’s mother more than Elena’s father.  I still want Raphael to smite him something awful, he so has it coming.  I’m unsure what to think of the mother.  I want to cling to the hope that she is redeemable but I don’t think we will learn of her fate for several books.  As to Elena’s father and step-family…  I actually liked the step-mother and believe that Elena will find comradery in her younger sister.  Her dad is just going to be an ass, not much anyone can do about him beyond hitting him with angel fire.

It is still entertaining to watch Elena adjust to this new life and I truly think these two were meant for each other.  They make each other stronger and Raphael is really starting to grow on me.  There is so many little plot threads that I want to explore and know the outcome for right now dammit.  I want to spend more time with the guild hunters, get to the bottom of Elena’s family issues.  I want to know more about the characters in Raphael’s seven.  Just so much to love and explore in this world that it pains me to set it aside for now.  But I am… My mood is just not in the right place to truly enjoy this series so I am going to save it.  Rest assured though I will be back for more.
