Vampire hunter Elena Deveraux knows she is the best- but she does not know if even she is good enough for this job. Hired by the dangerously beautiful archangel Raphael, a being so lethal that no mortal wants his attention, Elena knows failure is not an option—even if the task is impossible.
Because this time, it’s not a wayward vamp she has to track. It’s an archangel gone bad.
The job will put Elena in the midst of a killing spree like no other—and pull her to the razor’s edge of passion. Even if the hunt does not destroy her, succumbing to Raphael’s seductive touch just might. For when archangels play, mortals break.
I switched to this book upon the recommendation of friends when the book I was currently reading just wasn’t working for me. I plan to return to that title someday but was in the mood for something grittier, more serious, and by an author I hadn’t tried yet. So this one, which is ironically on tomorrows Top Ten Tuesday list for being on my to-read shelf for far too long…, was one of the ones I put up for suggestion to pick my next read on my social media accounts. I’m glad it won!
While I enjoyed this one I’m not sure I’m quite there yet for the series, the author has won me over, though, as her writing was excellent. It wasn’t until the last three of four chapters that I decided to give this book that fourth star. Up until the end I was still trying to decide if I liked this world or not. The book was good and like I said the writing, character development and world building top-notch, but… I didn’t care for the Angels or vampires very much. I kinda though they were assholes and I like my paranormal characters to be the good-guys. Oh sure there can be evil ones among them but on the whole all of these Angels were a bunch of power crazed pricks. For the first half of the book I kept waiting for Elena’s love interest to show up because I thought surly it couldn’t be Raphael or I hoped it wasn’t.
I’m still not sold on the Angels as a whole but I Raphael’s little band of seven is starting to grow on me. I also want to know what happens with Elena and her family. I want to know more about her past and see her put her jackass of a father in his place. That is going to be beautiful to watch. This world reminded me a bit of the Chicagoland Vampire series, another one that took me several books to truly be sold on. I’m hoping that this one ends up being as beloved as that one. It is always nice to find a new world to explore and fingers crossed this one is one I can become lost in for quite some time. Off to start book #2.
