Progress Report: A Game of Thrones p272

Progress Report

Welcome to my first Progress Report post.  This is a new feature that I plan to use while reading a particularly long or slow read.  I will share on Sundays my thoughts on my current read.  This isn’t going to be a ‘review’ just some quick points and ideas I have while in the middle of my book.  If you’ve read the book feel free to chime-in in the comments, but please keep it spoiler free.

I am on page 272 of A Game of Thrones by Martin.  I was dreading the start of this mammoth book.  I did not enjoy Lord of the Rings, the only other high fantasy book I’ve read.  I really hated that book.  It was slow torture and it had turned me off of wanting to read anything else that was remotely similar. I also am not such a fan of historical reads, but for some reason time travel usually doesn’t bug me, something the Dark-Hunter world uses from time to time.

Still a lot of my friends on Goodreads have read and enjoyed the book.  A real-life friend recommended it to me and another one raved about the TV series.  I was able to get the book for free through a book exchange and decided to give it a try.  After all the reason I tried Twilight (didn’t think you would ever see that book mentioned in a blog post about Game of Thrones, did ya) was it was so popular we couldn’t keep it on the shelf at work.  That book opened up a world of paranormal to me, and I still love the genre.  If so many people loved this book, Game of Thrones, I needed to give it a try at least.

I was apprehensive, but determine and started the book Dec 31.  The first chapter or two I was still on the fence, but soon realized I was hooked.  The book is consuming my thought and at so few pages in, already affecting my dreams. The book is going to be a slow read, hell the first three books that I have on hand are going to take me probably all month or longer. It will be worth it though.  I can see why it is so popular: sex, violence, blood, death, drama, diabolical villains and complex heroes.  It is a freaking soap-opera in print.  Off to read some more.

  1. Yay! Glad to hear you are enjoying it so far.

I really like the idea of “progress reports” for larger books. Might have to consider something similar for a few books I plan to read this year. I’ve been putting them off because it takes longer to read them and then I feel like I have nothing to show for it on the blog… If that makes sense, haha.
