Book 7 in the Eternal Guardians series. Release date: 9/29/14
I received this book from the publisher through Net Galley for an honest review
Nick –Leader of the half-breeds and the last true hero. He’s spent his life fighting a dark pull toward the gods. A pull he now knows is linked to his father Krónos and the Titan’s plan to escape from the Underworld.
But Nick’s hidden powers are coveted by more than just his father. Imprisoned by Hades, Nick battles every form of torture imaginable as the sadistic god schemes to break him. Only one thing is keeping him sane. One woman who gives him the strength to fight the relentless darkness. She has a dangerous plan of her own, though, and as Nick’s powers grow stronger, even she might not be enough to alter his destiny.
As the fate of the world hangs in the balance, Nick’s allegiances are tested. And no one knows whether he will choose to fight for good or succumb to the sinister lure of evil. Not even him.
This book was much better than the previous one. Looks like I am going to be sticking with the series for a while longer and see if they ever find the last orb. This was Nick’s story and it had a much different feel to it than from the other stories in this series. Nick has been around from the beginning and it was nice to see him get his H.E.A. It was also nice to see some resolution come about with the love triangle between him and his brother and the Queen, his brother’s soul mate. I’ve often thought that Nick got the short end of the stick in that whole situation and wanted to see him find someone and be free of the soul mate curse. This book wraps things up nicely, although it got pretty messed up before being fixed fairly simply.
This book’s title is very appropriate, much of the story and characters were very twisted, not really perverse, but this book did push the envelope compared to earlier books. Cynna was a great match for Nick and had her own interesting history that came out. She is a strong woman and it was fun to watch her character be there for Nick to help him grow and be the grounding he needed. She also had her own demons to overcome and Nick was able to be her strength as well. For much of the story we didn’t see much of the past Heroes or Heroines. They came into play near the end or half way point, but I think that if someone wanted to pick this book up to and read as a stand alone they could.
Over all I really liked it, only thing I thought was weak was the ‘bad’ guy. Sure Zagreus was one sick puppy, but I think there is something there. I’m not sure he couldn’t be redeemed in a future book. Or maybe not. I’m torn over this idea. I think he really did care for Cynna, but how their relationship ended didn’t set well with me. I think he will be back in a future book, just don’t know if it will be to be redeemed or made even more twisted.
Good book, glad I requested it and gave the series another chance.
