Monday Morning Question: Are there stories you rather watch than read?

Good Monday morning to you all,  hard to believe we are almost half way through May already!  Where is the year going?  Before you know it the year is going to be half over.  Spent the weekend off Facebook, not a fan of the Mother’s Day suck up fest that goes on, so I spent my time playing in dirt again and have the blisters to show for it.  Anyways back to books,  this weekend we watched the three hour second Hobbit movie.  I really don’t know why I bother, I don’t like the books and the movie didn’t make much sense.  Why the hell did it not start off where the last one finished?  So I thought I would ask are there some stories that you rather just skip the book and watch to movie?

For me anything by Tolkien,  his books are so boring I refuse to suffer through one again.  He just over kills it with the descriptions and the story just doesn’t move, you read and read and nothing happens.  So for me I will just watch the marathon length movies that are almost as bad as the books, but hey New Zealand looks so beautiful that I definitely want to visit someday.  I also have issues this Tolkien’s total lack of characters of a female gender.  Another author where I will just watch to movie is Orson Scott Card, and again the previews of Ender’s Game made the movie look a lot more interesting than it really was.  I have read a couple of books by Card, but his political leaning come bleeding out in his writing and I am on a whole different planet from him when it comes to political beliefs.

Those are just a couple of examples, I’m sure there are more, but I need to get the laundry done as I have a kitty with a hurting tooth that needs to go to the vet early this afternoon.  Generally I am a the book is always better than the movie, but there are always exceptions to the rule and with a few select books I would just rather wait for the movie.  Have a great week everyone, see you for Top Ten Tuesday tomorrow.

  1. The movie for Ender’s Game was TERRIBLE. I was so disappointed. I am not normally one of those “the movie didn’t match the book!” kind of people, but in this instance, I really thought they could have done better. Reconsider reading Ender’s Game sometime if you like the idea of the plot, because the movie did it no justice.

    1. I’ll keep it in mind. I’ve noticed it is on several Top Ten Tuesday lists this week. I’m going to have to get over a bit of prejudice against the author before I can attempt the book again though.

      1. I need to listen to my own advice and just let some things go and enjoy the story. Once I mature or relax a bit there are going to a lot of different books I’m going to take a second look at. I’m just stubborn… With King though, I think it may be a bit of I have changed in reading taste too much to enjoy his books anymore. When I was younger I could handle a lot of the gore that can be in his books, now I really don’t want to read detailed descriptions of a raccoon cut in half by a giant dome for instance. I do want to give his Dark Tower Series another try someday, he does a good job of conveying an idea/ teaching a lesson without spoon feeding it to the reader.
