Changing Times by Jacqueline Rhoades

Finished this book just the other day so I thought I would make this my first full review.

Changing Times by Jacqueline Rhoades – 5 Stars

There are few authors who I enjoy that I will read anything they publish. Ms Rhoades is one of those authors. Even her books that fall outside of the genre’s that I normally stick to are a delight to read and Changing Times is no exception.

This is book two in her Hidden Mountain series, her only non-paranormal series. I think that I enjoyed this book even more than the first. Lorelei is a strong woman who has had no one but herself to count on much of her life. She has had to create a barrier to keep others out and herself safe. In her small town she has quite the reputation that wasn’t earned, but perhaps fueled a little by her actions or acting to create a persona that was expected of her by much of the town. She had a hard life and was deprived of much while growing up, most tragic of which was the love and security a child deserved. Despite her circumstances she became a smart and good woman who only wished for a family, love and security that had been denied to her. This book starts off where the last ended and Lorelei has found a place where she believes she can carve out a fair and honest life for her and her child that is on the way. She isn’t afraid to work for her place and will take nothing from anyone. Then Cob shows up and turns her life upside down and she feels her security and place slipping from her fingertips. Lorelei has trouble trusting and doesn’t want to believe that she could have everything she ever wanted in these two men she now lives with. Cob is thrown for a loop and slowly comes to realize Lorelei is what he wants and needs in his life, only if he could convince her of the same. Slowly he learns how to tame the independent/wild woman that is used to being in control. He teaches her to trust and let others in and that she is worthy of the love she so desperately wants.

Can’t believe I read this book in a day, didn’t want to put it down. Little less outside drama than the last book, but I think a better tale. Many of the same characters from the last book and we get to see how things are progressing on the mountain. I would dearly love to see someone stand up to the church ladies in future books and I liked the new character Olivia who is Lorelei’s new boss. I hope we get to see more of her in future books. I don’t think things are quite settled with Junior and the drama from the last book, so I look forward to seeing how things play out in future additions to this series Ms. Rhoades has created. Thank you for the excellent escape.

Alright so this is the same review I posted on Goodreads,  that is what most of them will be. However if I have any additional comments to share about the book or author I will do so.  This is probably my favorite independent author.  Her books are well written and her style reminds me of a lot of my other favorite authors.  I know this author reads a lot and it definitely shows in her writing and ability to create compelling characters and a good plot. Her books move at a great pace and I have yet to find a book of hers that I didn’t enjoy.  I recommend you check her out,  I don’t think you will be disappointed!

Happy Reading, Amy
